Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration
What it does
- Calibrates the zero (center) position of the steering wheel
- Provides accurate steering angle data to:
- ABS
- ESC
- Power steering systems
- Ensures correct stability and steering assistance behavior
When it is required
- After steering wheel removal or replacement
- After alignment (wheel geometry) adjustment
- After replacing the steering angle sensor
- After battery disconnection in some models
- When steering or ESC fault codes are present
Conditions that must be met
- Front wheels aligned straight ahead
- Steering wheel centered
- Vehicle on level ground
- Engine running or ignition ON (depending on system)
- No active ABS/ESC fault codes
- Stable battery voltage
What happens during calibration
- Sensor zero position is stored
- ECU verifies steering angle plausibility
- Communication between:
- Steering sensor
- ABS/ESC module
- Power steering unit
- Calibration values are saved
If calibration is not performed
- ESC or ABS warning lights may remain on
- Incorrect stability control intervention
- Steering assistance may feel abnormal
- Fault codes may reappear
After calibration
- Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock if requested
- Perform a short test drive
- Confirm straight-line driving stability
- Verify no steering or stability warnings remain
