What it does
- Adjusts the tension of the parking brake cables
- Ensures proper handbrake operation and wheel holding
- Synchronizes mechanical cables with electronic parking brake system (if equipped)
When it is required
- After replacing parking brake cables
- After brake system maintenance affecting the cables
- When handbrake lever feels loose or ineffective
- When electronic parking brake warning appears
Conditions that must be met
- Vehicle stationary on level ground
- Parking brake released (for adjustment procedure)
- Ignition ON (if electronic system involved)
- Stable battery voltage
- Diagnostic tool connected (for EPB calibration)
What happens during tensioning
- Cables are adjusted to manufacturer specifications
- Electronic parking brake system may learn new cable tension
- Brake engagement and release forces monitored and stored
If procedure is not performed
- Handbrake may not hold vehicle properly
- Uneven braking or wheel drag
- Warning lights may remain active
- Reduced safety when parked on slopes
After procedure
- Test parking brake function at low speed and on slope
- Verify electronic parking brake status in live data (if applicable)
- Confirm no warning lights remain
- Check handbrake lever travel and tension
