Parking Brake Service Position
What it does
- Puts the parking brake system (mechanical or electronic) into service mode
- Releases tension on brake cables or EPB actuators
- Allows safe replacement or maintenance of brake components
When it is required
- Before replacing rear brake pads or discs
- Before working on parking brake cables or EPB actuators
- During brake system maintenance or inspection
- When instructed by manufacturer service procedure
Conditions that must be met
- Vehicle stationary
- Ignition ON (or as instructed)
- Stable battery voltage
- Diagnostic tool connected (for EPB systems)
- No active critical brake fault codes
What happens during service position activation
- EPB or parking brake actuators retract to safe positions
- Brake cable tension is released
- Rear brakes are unlocked for maintenance
- System confirms readiness for component replacement
If procedure is not performed
- Risk of damage to brake components
- Handbrake may remain engaged
- EPB actuator strain or fault codes
- Unsafe conditions during maintenance
After service position
- Perform parking brake calibration or tensioning
- Verify correct brake operation
- Exit service mode via diagnostic tool if applicable
- Confirm warning lights are cleared
