What it does
- Programs and codes new keys or key cards to the vehicle
- Synchronizes keys with immobilizer and body control system
- Enables engine start and remote locking/unlocking functions
When it is required
- When adding a new key or key card
- After key loss or replacement
- After immobilizer, BCM/UCH, or ECU replacement
- When keys are not recognized by the vehicle
Conditions that must be met
- Vehicle stationary
- Ignition ON (or key/card inserted as required)
- Stable battery voltage
- Diagnostic tool connected
- All keys/cards present (depending on system design)
- ISK or security code available
What happens during key coding
- Vehicle enters key programming mode
- Keys/cards are learned and stored in control unit
- Immobilizer synchronization is performed
- Old or missing keys may be erased
If key coding is not performed
- Vehicle may not start
- Remote locking/unlocking may not function
- Immobilizer warning may remain active
After key coding
- Test all keys/cards for engine start
- Verify remote and hands-free functions
- Clear any related fault codes
- Confirm immobilizer warning light is OFF
